Should Christians listen to secular music?

January 6, 2007

Drene Ivy, arranger, composer and vocalist of Beachwood, Ohio at www.dreneivy.com  has recently published an article," Should Christians listen to secular Music", which will be the subject on my radio show, "Think About It" in the near future.  Joe Lewis,Jazz saxophonist, arranger and composer of Joe Lewis Music School, and D.J. Handy, arranger and composer of 1 LUV Productions, are just a few of  many musicians who play inspirational music for their churches and secular music for events that require it.  It has been frowned on in the past by some churches and many musicians and vocalists (i.e.,Sam Cooke & Michael Jackson)  have been excommunicated from their church because of this. There are  many entertainers who started out in the church that chose to sing secular music only if they could not do both. The movies, "The Fighting Temptations", "Preaching To The Choir" and The Gospel"  are a few recent movies that  focused on this controversy of church music vs secular music. I have heard a few people voice their opinion of Yolanda Adams singing a secular song [in tribute to Chaka Khan] on the BET music awards last year.  We need to come to a meeting of the minds on this matter; wouldn't you say?   I want to know your opinion and why. Please indicate if I have permission to mention your name on the air.

Drene Ivy's , Joe Lewis'  and D.J. Handy's music can be heard on "The Jazz Collection" on www.pscradio.com click on the JAZZ MASTER for dates and times... special requests(1 318 255-2772 or 318 255-2710), send in a CD to be played (see home page of this site) or email me at TCBProductions81@wmconnect.com .

"Think About It" is heard at www.shoutoutusa.com  (variety) CPI Internet radio ( 1 866 833-0445) on  Sundays  at 1:00PM  CST, on WWW.fbccradio.com  (Christian) -  Sundays at 3:00PM CST,  call  Stacey "J" at 1  225 590-7799 for dates & times of other shows  or special requests. Be sure to listen to her Neo-Christian show (positive music with a secular flare) 8-11PM and Christian pop/rock from 11PM-7AM daily.

I feel that it sends mix messages, I know a lot of Christians that listen to both music, however, most do not support the musician by buying their music or going to their concert. This is because there is a perception that spiritual and earthly does not mix. I feel true Christians do not But not all of th secular music is bad.

First of all, Thanks for my lovely locs. I started the Saturday before last and I have already seen progress. On the subject of the matter, I feel that it is okay if Christians listen to secular music-there is no perfect person in this world. Just because a person is a Christian, that doesn't mean that because they are partaking in what they are listening to. I will send you some pictures of my progress. Thanks, Mona Blanks

Hi Mona, The lovely locks are for a lovely person. With patience and time they will become even lovelier and then you will be a "Happy Nappy" too :>) I feel that choosing the music we listen to is the same as choosing the movies and television shows that we watch. Our thoughts and views on life are created by what we see and hear; therefore, we must be selective in the content of what we consume. I listen to all kinds of music, but the lyrics must be positive, not degrading or vulgar. This is important because "SO WE THINK, SO WE ARE" - Psalms 23:7 Thank you for taking the time to make a comment.
